Marelli outlines plans to become carbon neutral in operations by 2030

Press Release

  • The goal will be met through energy-saving activities, the use of 100 per cent renewable grid electricity, self-generation, and the neutralisation of unavoidable emissions through certified projects.
  • The commitment advances Marelli’s strategy and roadmap toward a more sustainable and responsible business.

Marelli, a leading Automotive supplier, announced carbon neutral in its operations by 2030, (Scope 1 and Scope 2). This step will be a key part of the company’s bigger plan of commitment and transition towards building a sustainable business. It will be achieved through a series of different measures aimed at minimizing energy consumption, ensuring the use of renewable energy and neutralising remaining unavoidable emissions.

In addition to the environmental and CO2 reduction targets established in the company’s mid-term strategy, this new step defines a more ambitious goal and specific plans to achieve it. The actions will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from direct sources that the company owns or controls directly, as well as indirect emissions from energy purchased and used by the organisation.

Dinesh Paliwal, Executive Chairman, Marelli, said, “The automotive industry has a critical role to play in creating a cleaner, greener world. In addition to our role as a supplier of technologies which enable the responsible transition towards full electrification, this significant investment in achieving full operational carbon neutrality is a milestone in building a stronger, more sustainable Marelli.”

Beda Bolzenius, President and CEO of Marelli said, “This is the first step for Marelli in outlining firm plans to reduce our overall carbon emissions. Our next step will be to define clear goals and measures across indirect emissions, which includes working with suppliers, customers, as well as internally within our own product and manufacturing processes. We have a long way to go, but the investments being announced today are a significant step forward.”

Primarily, Marelli will achieve this goal by reducing energy consumption and associated emissions through the ongoing implementation of “energy efficiency Monozukuri.” “Energy efficiency Monozukuri” was introduced in recent years and is a series of strategies and activities aimed directly at reducing energy usage at plants, such as the introduction of high-efficiency and energy-saving equipment, as well as improvement activities such as streamlining operating lines in manufacturing sites. Further actions will be implemented within this stream of activities to reduce energy consumption in our facilities, with a focus on improving the efficient use of utilities, and in our processes, with the introduction of new and even more efficient equipment and machinery.

Another key component of the strategy is the commitment to source 100 per cent of the electric energy used in operations from renewable sources or to offset it with certified carbon credits: the emphasis will be on photovoltaic and wind-generated power.
Renewable energy will be generated on-site or purchased through specific certified contracts such as Power Purchase Agreements and green supply contracts.

Finally, any residual emissions that cannot be captured through our primary efforts will be offset by participating in certified carbon projects around the world. In addition, the company will continue to monitor new renewable energy technologies and solutions aimed at decarbonization that can assist Marelli in meeting its objectives. Marelli will continue to take the lead in developing innovative solutions to improve vehicle efficiency and aid in the transition to a low-carbon society. Electrification technologies and solutions that improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines are included.
