Volvo Buses India has expanded its premium coach portfolio with the launch of the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper Coach, introducing a new platform that combines advanced safety systems, connected technologies and enhanced passenger comfort for long-distance commercial transport. Unveiled at Prawaas 5.0, the new coach has been developed to address the evolving requirements of intercity, tourism and pilgrimage travel while helping operators improve fleet utilisation.
Built on Volvo’s globally proven 9600 platform, the 15-metre coach is powered by the VEDX8 diesel engine mated to Volvo’s I-Shift automated transmission, offering improved drivability, fuel efficiency and operational performance. The seater-sleeper configuration enables operators to serve both short- and long-distance routes using a single platform, while accommodating 51 passengers through 27 premium lower-deck seats, 21 upper-deck sleeper berths and three rear sleeper berths.
A key highlight of the new coach is its comprehensive suite of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies. The Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper features a 360-degree Camera System that provides drivers with complete visibility around the vehicle, while the Camera Monitor System (CMS) replaces conventional rear-view mirrors to minimise blind spots and improve visibility during adverse weather and low-light conditions.
Further enhancing operational safety, the coach is equipped with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that continuously monitors tyre pressure and temperature, helping improve reliability, fuel efficiency and tyre life. It also incorporates a Driver State Monitoring System capable of detecting signs of fatigue and driver distraction, alongside an Alcohol Interlock System that prevents vehicle operation if alcohol is detected.
Volvo has also integrated an advanced telematics platform that enables operators to monitor vehicle location, fuel consumption, speed, performance parameters and operational alerts in real time, supporting predictive maintenance and improved fleet management.
Speaking at the launch, S S Gill, Chief Commercial Officer, VE Commercial Vehicles, said the premium bus segment in India continues to evolve as operators seek greater productivity while meeting rising passenger expectations for safety, comfort and luxury. He added that the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper combines Volvo’s globally proven engineering with technologies tailored to Indian operating conditions.
Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President – Bus Division, VE Commercial Vehicles, said the new coach has been developed to offer operators greater flexibility by combining premium seating and sleeper configurations on a single platform. He noted that the vehicle enables operators to efficiently cater to diverse route requirements while delivering a premium travel experience associated with the Volvo 9600 range.
The coach also introduces refreshed interiors with enhanced ambient lighting, integrated entertainment provisions, USB charging points, privacy features, an onboard kitchenette and a fully integrated toilet, further improving passenger convenience during long-distance operations.
With the introduction of the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper Coach, Volvo Buses India has further strengthened its premium coach portfolio by integrating advanced safety technologies, intelligent driver assistance systems and connected fleet solutions, reinforcing its focus on next-generation passenger mobility for the Indian market.
