Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) recently launched the new Dzire. With it, the company also unveiled the next generation of its proven K-series engine. According to Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki India Limited, it makes the Dzire more desirable. Srivastava mentioned, “Building on overwhelming customer response of the most preferred Sedan, the 2020 Dzire is fitted with the next generation K-series engine with segment-first idle start-stop technology (ISS), upgraded premium exterior design, refreshed interiors and advanced feature.” Aimed at benefitting the customers, he added that the new Dzire will help the company to keep its brand promise to offer products with state-of-the-art design and advanced technology. “The introduction of the advanced K-series dual jet, dual VVT BSVI petrol engine with idle start-stop function makes it more desirable, low on emissions and high on fuel efficiency,” he claimed.

The new K-series engine
The 2020 Dzire facelift is powered by the next-gen K-series, 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, dual jet and dual VVT BSVI compliant petrol engine claimed to offer a rated power of 88 hp at 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 113 Nm at 4400 rpm. The engine can be mated to a five-speed manual or an Automatic Gear Shift (AGS) variant. Claimed to offer a best-in-class fuel efficiency of 23.26 kmpl in the manual transmission variant and 24.12 kmpl in case of the AGS variant. The engine also offers a higher compression ratio, cooled EGR system and piston cooling jet aimed at offering an improved engine efficiency and reducing friction.

Maruti Suzuki launched the first K-series engine in October 2008. In 2010, the company attained the production milestone of five lakh K-series engines in a time span of fewer than 23 months. From an installed capacity of 500,000 K-series engines per annum, to meet the growing demand, the company decided to add another 200,000 units by 2012. Back then the salient features of K-series engine included all aluminium lightweight engine for best-in-class fuel efficiency. An innovative rocker-less DOHC camshaft, plastic intake manifold and offset crankshaft with low tension rings are said to have reduced losses and improve fuel efficiency. A Smart Distributor Less Ignition (SDLI) system with dedicated plug top coils, high-pressure semi-return fuel system and advanced injectors are claimed to offer uniform combustion. Optimised cylinder block, light piston and nut less con rod are known to have made up the light-weight configuration then. Improved engine stiffness and use of advanced technology that included a silent timing chain to improve Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) levels and a 10 per cent less friction were among the other highlights. The state-of-the-art, fully integrated K-series engine manufacturing facility located at the Gurgaon plant had Maruti Suzuki engineers work in tandem with the Suzuki engine design team for designing, calibration and testing of the engine in India and Japan.
