DHL Supply Chain, a unit of Germany-based Deutsche Post DHL, opened its new Sagamihara Logistics Center, a purpose-built facility located in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Tokyo. The company invested USD$50m for the construction of the centre.

“Our investment in the new Sagamihara Logistics Centre is evidence of DHL’s long term commitment to the logistics market in Japan,” said Victor Mok, CEO of DHL Supply Chain North Asia. “Incorporating cutting-edge technologies and best warehousing practices the new facility is now ready to operate and is the ideal solution for retail, consumer and healthcare customers.”

The 44,000 square meter facility took 12 months to complete and will add 20% to DHL’s warehousing footprint in the country. It will operate as a multi-user campus with labor, resources and infrastructure shared across different customer operations to deliver synergy benefits; providing customers with greater flexibility and scalability to meet demand fluctuations.

Strategically located in the west of Tokyo, the facility is in close proximity to airports and docks for international requirements. The inland location means it is built on a solid foundation and the facility exceeds earthquake proofing standards greatly reducing the risk of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, affecting operations.

The opening ceremony was attended by key stakeholders involved in the construction of the Sagamihara Logistics Centre, including Takashi Suzuki, Head of Construction, Realty & Financial Business Division (Division Three), Itochu Corporation; Taisuke Miyajima, CEO and President of Kenedix, which are investors of IK Investment Two G.K., and Makoto Takahashi, Representative Director and President of Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering.

Noboru Matsuoka, President and Representative Director, DHL Supply Chain Japan added, “The new warehouse provides DHL with a great opportunity to grow its supply chain business. It will be a hive of activity servicing the country, and will provide a platform where we can offer a range of value-added activities for our customers including co-packing, labeling or technical services.”
