Integrated Driverline Solutions

As the automotive industry moves towards electrification and intelligent mobility, integrated driveline solutions are a fundamental requirement, writes Upendra Kasbekar.

The global automotive sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by regulatory changes, efficiency demands, and rapid technological advancements. At Yashobhoomi, Delhi, the ‘Components Show’ served as a premier platform where industry leaders showcased ground breaking developments in integrated driveline solutions. From innovative e-axles to AI-powered torque management systems, leading firms demonstrated innovations shaping the future of mobility. Companies such as ZF, Eaton, BorgWarner, Schaeffler, and Brakes India took centre stage, unveiling technologies designed to enhance efficiency and safety across all vehicle segments.

Ø ZF’s next-gen e-drive

ZF, a global pioneer in driveline and chassis technology, is at the forefront of mobility evolution with its latest integrated driveline solutions. The company reaffirmed its dedication to sustainable, safe, and intelligent transportation, aligning with India’s growing emphasis on advanced mobility solutions.

A standout feature at ZF’s exhibit was its ground breaking X-by-Wire technology, which replaces traditional mechanical and hydraulic linkages with electronic signals. This shift enables enhanced vehicle control, superior steering flexibility, and improved driving stability, key aspects of software-defined vehicles. ZF’s brake-by-wire, steer-by-wire, and electronically controlled active damping systems demonstrated how these technologies are elevating safety, customisation, and overall driving comfort.

ZF also showcased its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), integrating radar and camera-based solutions to improve road safety. Features such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning (LDW), and adaptive cruise control (ACC) further cement the company’s role in progressing autonomous driving. “India represents a strategic market for ZF, and we are committed to facilitating the nation’s transition towards a sustainable, safe, and interconnected mobility ecosystem,” stated Akash Passey, President, ZF group India. Through its focus on integrated drive line solutions and ADAS, ZF continues to shape the mobility landscape in India and beyond.

Ø BorgWarner’s push for E-mobility in India

BorgWarner made a strong impression at the expo, unveiling a diverse portfolio of eMobility technologies. The company’s integrated driveline solutions include eMotors, high-voltage coolant heaters, next-gen inverters, and turbo charging solutions, designed for fully electric, hybrid, and advanced combustion powertrains.

A key highlight was BorgWarner’s Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system, developed in collaboration with FinDreams Battery’s blade cell technology. These modular battery packs, ideal for buses, trucks, and off-road vehicles, offer high energy

density, enhanced safety, and exceptional reliability. Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, power-drive systems, underscored the significance of the developments. “With our high-energy LFP batteries, advanced power electronics, and thermal management solutions, we are committed to supporting India’s rapid transition to cleaner, more efficient mobility solutions. Our global expertise and local presence enable us to be a key partner in this transformation,” he stated. BorgWarner’s holistic approach ensures that India’s commercial and off-road vehicle segment remains at the forefront of electrification.

Ø Schaeffler’s holistic aftermarket solutions

Schaeffler, a frontrunner in vehicle lifetime solutions, introduced its integrated driveline solutions aimed at maximising vehicle efficiency, reliability, and life cycle management. The company’s Vehicle Lifetime Solutions (VLS) approach integrates high-precision components, aftermarket services, and digital solutions, making it an all-encompassing solution for two-wheelers, passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and tractors.

At the expo, Schaeffler highlighted its advanced clutch and transmission systems, developed to enhance durability and fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the company is integrating Vitesco Technology’s electronic components, strengthening India’s shift towards e-mobility.

The acquisition of Koovers has bolstered Schaeffler’s service network, ensuring seamless supply chain integration for driveline components.

Additionally, its RepXpert initiative, which spans 11,000-12,000 km annually, continues to train mechanics and fleet operators in driveline maintenance, reinforcing safety and longevity. “By integrating precision components, intelligent diagnostics, and aftermarket support, we are delivering a comprehensive driveline solution that enhances both performance and sustainability,” commented Sharad Bhatia, Head – VLS, Schaeffler India. With an increasing focus on digitalisation and electrification, Schaeffler is set to revolutionise India’s automotive aftermarket landscape.

Ø Brakes India’s next braking technologies

Brakes India made a compelling statement at the expo, unveiling next-generation braking solutions tailored for electric and hybrid vehicles. The company introduced several cutting-edge technologies aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and performance. A standout innovation was its E-Boost Technology, a non-vacuum-based brake booster that seamlessly integrates pedal-applied braking with regenerative braking. “This innovation enhances both efficiency and safety in electric and hybrid vehicles,” remarked Sriram Viji, Managing Director, Brakes India.

Other key innovations included its Motor-on-Drum Brake, which has already secured major domestic and international orders, and the opposed piston caliper, designed for high-performance electric vehicles. This technology reduces drag while enhancing acceleration and braking, while also adding aesthetic value in open-wheel vehicle designs. By prioritising integrated driveline solutions, Brakes India is pushing the frontiers of braking technology to meet the evolving needs of EVs and hybrids.

Ø The Long road ahead

The Components Show underscored the critical role of integrated driveline solutions in the transformation of mobility. From ZF’s e-drive systems to BorgWarner’s eMobility advancements and Schaeffler’s aftermarket innovations, the industry is experiencing a paradigm shift towards intelligent, sustainable, and highly efficient drivetrains. As India continues its transition towards electrification and advanced mobility, these innovations will be instrumental in reducing emissions, optimising fuel efficiency, and enhancing vehicle safety.
