Mukand Sumi Special Steel to Build ₹2,345 Cr Greenfield Steel Plant in Karnataka, Sets Focus on Sustainability & Scale

Mukand Sumi Special Steel Limited (MSSSL) has announced a significant capacity expansion with the construction of a greenfield integrated steelmaking facility at Kanakapura, Koppal, Karnataka. A joint venture between India’s Bajaj Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, MSSSL is further strengthening its position as one of India’s leading special steel manufacturers.

With this project, MSSSL’s annual production capacity will increase to 700,000 tonnes, placing it among India’s top special steel producers. This investment marks an important milestone in MSSSL’s long-term growth strategy and is currently subject to environmental clearances.

India’s focus on Atma Nirbhar Bharat, coupled with robust economic growth and infrastructure development, has driven demand for high-quality special steel across automotive, energy, and industrial sectors. Since its inception in 2018, MSSSL has consistently supplied around 350,000 tonnes of steel products annually, including bars, wire rods, and secondary products, with a strong presence in the automotive and engineering markets. Strategic collaborations and an emphasis on quality have helped MSSSL earn the trust of both domestic and global manufacturers.

To meet rising demand and evolving quality requirements, MSSSL is investing in cutting-edge technologies, such as a jumbo bloom caster, modern rolling mills, and advanced testing and inspection systems, enabling production of critical steel grades for powertrains, railways, and bearings. “This expansion marks a significant milestone in our long-term growth roadmap. Guided by the forward-looking vision of our Chairman, Mr. Niraj Bajaj, we are investing in sustainable and future-ready technologies that will strengthen our position in the global special steel market. By enhancing our manufacturing capabilities, we are not only responding to the evolving demands of our customers but also aligning ourselves with the broader national objective of self-reliance. Our aim is to deliver exceptional value to our customers while building a future-ready, responsible steel ecosystem,” said Mr. Vipul Mashruwala, President, MSSSL.

Designed as a sustainability-first facility, the new plant represents a ₹2,345 crore investment and will operate with a Zero Liquid, Solid, and Gaseous Discharge Model, sourcing over 95% of its energy from renewables. MSSSL is targeting net-zero steel manufacturing by 2050, and this expansion marks a key step toward that commitment. Future development phases will incorporate hydrogen-ready infrastructure and carbon capture technologies. “The new facility will allow us to serve growing demand with greater efficiency, quality, and environmental responsibility. It is a step forward in realizing our shared vision of creating a world-class, sustainable special steel enterprise,” Mr. Mashruwala added.

The project is slated to begin operations by early 2028 and will feature a 0.35 million tonnes per annum integrated steel plant, including iron-making, steel-making, and blooming mill facilities. The investment emphasizes flexibility, automation, and digital integration to ensure consistent product quality and optimized energy use.

With this expansion, MSSSL will sharpen its focus on critical applications in automotive, railways, oil & gas, energy, and bearing steel, positioning itself as a trusted partner for global OEMs. This move reflects MSSSL’s strategy of combining scale, sustainability, and smart manufacturing to align with India’s Industry 4.0 vision and meet global demand for low-emission, high-performance steel.
