Volkswagen (VW) India has announced that it is recalling about 323,700 Volkswagen, SKODA and Audi brand cars in India equipped with the EA 189 diesel engines affected by the emission scandal. VW presented its observations, findings and outlines of possible solutions on the EA 189 diesel engines to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).
The VW India said it will first present the technical released solution to Ministry of Heavy Industries and ARAI, and after approval the respective brands will carry out necessary actions. All owners of respective vehicles with the affected EA 189 diesel engines will be informed after the required solutions are approved by the competent authorities, VW Group India said. It added that necessary technical measures will be implemented in the vehicles at no cost to the customers.
According to Volkswagen India, from 2008 till end of November 2015, about 198,500 VW cars, 88,700 ŠKODA cars and 36,500 Audi branded cars sold in India are equipped with the affected engines. These include 1.2 l, 1.5 l, 1.6 l and 2 l diesel engines. VW’s EA 189 diesel engines were said to have been fitted with cheating devices that showed reduced emission levels during testing.
